SCBA to observe countrywide 'Black Day' today

LAHORE - Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Tuesday announced to observe countrywide Black Day on Wednesday (today) to denounce the removal of Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry among 60 superior court judges by former dictator General (r) Pervez Musharraf on November 3, 2007. The announcement made by the newly elected president of the SCBA Asma Jahangir and her cabinet. The legal fraternity throughout the country will raise black flags on their respective bars and hold meetings to denounce Musharrafs acts that 'subverted the fundamental rights of the people and enforced rule of the gun, she said. The lawyers, all over the country, have been asked to recall their heroic struggle for the restoration of the rule of law and take a fresh look for carrying out objectives of the struggle in a cohesive and constructive manner. To this day several lawyers continue to suffer as a result of this glorious struggle that stretched over many months. The legal fraternity must continue to push for legal reforms so that ordinary persons also gain confidence in the judiciary system. So far this objective has not been fully achieved, said Asma while pronouncing black day. The SCBA has also mourned the loss of their colleagues during the lawyers movement and vowed to help their families in an appropriate manner.
