LAHORE - Minister Environment Col (r) Shuja Khanzada on Monday stressed the need of collective efforts to check ever increasing vehicular pollution in Punjab.
Secretary Environment Anwar Rasheed, DG EPA Punjab Farooq Hameed Sh, Director EIA Naseem ur Rehman Shah and Senior officials of Excise and Taxation, Transport and Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority were present at a meeting presided by Minister Environment Col (r) Shuja Khanzada.
Issues like legislation for installation of catalytic converters in all vehicles and other retrofit devices like particle filters in diesel vehicles.
Presently, almost all the automotive manufacturers have been using the Euro-I technology for many years and, by shifting to the Euro-II technology, 30 percent emission of hazardous gasses would be decreased. The participants were informed that manufacturing of Euro-II technology vehicles have already been started but the supply of lead-free petrol in all parts of the country was still not ensured, adding that Euro-II technology vehicles could not be operated without this fuel. It was also discussed that vehicles registration conditions should be reviewed by amending procedure under practice regarding mandatory installation of catalytic converters. Similarly, the current list of specifications of vehicles approved by (PSQCA) and Engineering Development Board (EDB) should also be reviewed.
It was decided that Motor Vehicle Ordinance, 1965 and Provincial Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act, 2012, regarding mandatory installation of catalytic converters would be reviewed.
UHS issuing admittance cards
The University of Health Sciences (UHS) on Monday started issuing admittance cards to candidates who have submitted application forms for medical/dental colleges entrance test 2013.
The admittance cards, bearing candidates’ roll numbers and centres for examination, will be issued till September 07.
Over 41000 candidates have applied for medical and dental colleges entrance test to be held on September 22.
Meanwhile, Secretary General Woman Workers Union Shaheena Kausar on Monday called upon the Punjab Government to accelerate the process to formulate a policy for the betterment and uplift of  working women.  Addressing a meeting of the Woman Working Union, she said that the union has submitted recommendations for the proposed policy. 
Kausar called upon the government to formulate the policy and ensure its implementation. She demanded that all women workers should be given appointment letters as envisaged in the labour laws, social security cards and medical facilities. She said the government should implement minimum wages law and salaries should be transferred to bank accounts of women workers. She said transport facility should be given to the workers from industrial areas for their convenience.
