LAHORE - Islami Jamiat Tulba’s 13 students, accused of attempted murder and interfering with state affairs, have been sent to jail on judicial remand here Tuesday.
The Model Town judicial magistrate granted physical remand to a student, handing him over to police to investigate the robbery offence. However, 8 students got bail against submission of surety bond of Rs30,000 in the case.
The police produced seven IJT students including Rao Adnan, Abuzar Ghaffari, Mubashar, Khalid Umar and Wajid before the court of anti-terrorism Judge Ahmed Mehmood Ranjha.
After examining the case, the court stated that the students have falsely been nominated in anti-terrorism cases, and order to remove ATA sections from the FIRs. The court later directed police to produce all the students before judicial magistrates for further proceedings. Upon which, the students were produced before two magisterial courts of Model Town.
The police had arrested 21 Punjab University students affiliated with IJT for thrashing a university teacher. These arrests sparked violent protests by the IJT activists in and outside the Punjab University.
The police and Punjab University administration said the 21 students were arrested during a raid at a hostel. They said bottles of alcohol and bullets were recovered from Room No 345 which was allotted to Rao Adnan, the Nazim of the student organisation. The students, accused of interfering with state affairs and setting a bus on fire, have been booked in nine different cases including violence on a teacher of Law Department, Punjab University.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Liaqat Baloch has urged upon the Punjab chief minister to set up a judicial commission for a thorough enquiry into the recent incident in the Punjab University.
In a statement, he said that the students’ parents, civil society as also well-wishers of the Punjab University are deeply concerned over the deteriorating condition of mismanagement and moral decline at the institution. He said the matters unfortunately have reached the courts, bringing disrepute to the institution.
Baloch said that instead of attending to the real issues of the university and improving its conditions, the varsity management adopted hackneyed measures to malign and harass the IJT.  He said during the last five years, whenever any scandal came to surface, the PU authorities started malicious campaign against the IJT. However, no one knew the outcome, he said.
The JI secretary general said the latest developments at the PU campus are alarming. He said the threatening statements of the Punjab governor, Education and Law Ministers won’t help resolve the issue. He demanded the CM to order a judicial commission for a thorough probe into the whole situation so that the real problem could be solved.
