No terrorist held despite 400 police checkpoints

LAHORE There are above 400 police checkpoints established on daily basis in the metropolitan but ironically none of the terrorists was apprehended at any checkpoint since the terrorism incidents surged in the provincial capital whereas the expenses of the deputed police personnel on these checkpoints have geared up to Rs 46 million per month, TheNation has reliably learnt. According to the statistics available with TheNation, about 1,200 constables, 400 HCs, 400 ASIs and 200 SIs have been discharging their duties on 425 police checkpoints, which are set up on daily basis in the City with the directions of concerned station house officer (SHO), DSP, SP, SSP and DIG. A senior accountant in AG Office, who wished not to be named, said a constable was drawing Rs 18,000 salary per month, HC Rs 24,000, ASI Rs 24,500 and SI Rs 29,000 per month. Responding to a query, he said, Overall 1,200 constables were drawing Rs 21 million, 400 HCs Rs 9.6 million, 400 ASI Rs 9.8 million and 200 SIs were drawing Rs 5.8 million in the form of salaries per month, he added. Reliable sources claimed at least five police officers/officials are deputed at each police checkpoint including one assistant sub-inspector (ASI), one head constable (HC) and three constables under the supervision of one sub-inspector. The Lahore Police (Operations Wing) spokesman said at least four to five checkpoints were established in different areas of each police station on daily basis to thwart any suicidal attack. Besides these checkpoints, the metropolitan police further set up above 25 regular checkpoints at different exit/entry points of the City. According to the spokesman, regular checkpoints are especially established to arrest the suicide bombers. Such checkpoints have been set up at Gajumata, Suay Asil, Manga Mandi, Mohlniwal, Ravi Bridge, Sagian Bridge, Burki Road, Hadyara, Bedian and other exit/entry points. However, the terrorists carried out six brazen attacks at various leading sensitive and religious seminaries to fuel sectarian strife in the provincial capital during 2010 leaving more than 260 people dead and injuring hundreds others. However, none of the terrorists was arrested at any checkpoint since 2008 but according to Operations police spokesman one suspected terrorist was apprehended when a former SSP Operations Aftab Ahmed Cheema commanded the metropolitan police.
