Gas cylinder blast leaves 2 dead, 5 hurt

OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE Two minors - a sister and her brother - were killed while five others suffered multiple wounds when a gas cylinder exploded inside a chemical factory, which collapsed on Wandala Road, Nazeer Colony, in Shahdara police precincts on Friday. The deceased were identified as Abdul Shamzay and five-year-old Khams. According to police investigators, seconds after the explosion, the entire building collapsed. Resultantly about seven persons stuck under the debris. Police said the building caved in with a bang. As a result, seven people including Nasreen, 40, Iffat, 35, Shahid, 22, Usman, 20, Ahmed Naveed Malik, 27, Abdul Shamzay, 10, and his sister, suffered severe injuries. An eyewitness said Rescue teams reached the site within a few minutes. The dead body of the girl was recovered while boy Abdul Sami died at Mayo Hospital, he added. According to spokesman of Rescue 1122, fire fighters and other workers started the rescue operation and were able to recover body of a girl from the rubble while the six injured were shifted to the Mayo Hospital. About 10 fire engines were put into field, which managed to extinguish the fire that erupted and caused the building to collapse, he added. The rescuers, who participated in the operation, said that the total loss could not be ascertained as the entire building was reduced to skeleton. The owner of the Varnish Factory namely Mr. Azeem Mughal said all of the material placed inside the factory was reduced to ashes. Earlier, the bodies of the deceased were handed over to their heirs after police completed necessary medico-legal formalities. A case has been lodged against the owner of the factory on charges of having no practical measures of fire safety. Further investigations are underway.
