LAHORE - Pakistan’s largest three-day book fair concluded on Saturday at New Campus with a record sale of more than one hundred thousand books during first two days.
On the last day, Justice (r) Nazir Ghazi, former Governor Punjab Shahid Hamid, former IGP Zulfiqar Cheema, Lahore High Court Bar Association Secretary Ahmed Qayyum leading a lawyers’ delegation, Institute for Legal Research and Advocacy Chairman Syed Shahbaz Bukhari, senior journalists including Salman Ghani, Taufeeq Butt, Sajjad Mir, Hafeez Ullah Niazi, Rifat Alam, Imdad Hussain Bhatti, MPA Mary Gill, renowned writers and other prominent figures of society also visited the book fair.
Thousands of people from all walks of life, especially a large number of families, thronged PU book fair and purchased books of their interest from bookstalls.
During the last hours, the booksellers started to offer more than 50 per cent discount on books which because accelerated the momentum of sale.
Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran told the media the purpose of the book fair was to provide all kinds of books under one roof and for low prices. The PU administration would expand this book fair in future, keeping in view such a response from public, he added.
Senior journalists were also very happy to see a huge number of young students and people which proved that people still loved books. They said the book-loving nations always progressed.
They also demanded the government must organise such book fairs under its own supervision so that books could be provided to the people on discounted rates and reading habits could be promoted.
Meanwhile, a delegation of Lahore Education Reporters Association (LERA) visited PU book fair under the leadership of its President Mansoor Malik alongwith other members. The delegation too stressed the need of promoting among public the habit of book-reading. Despite huge development in the field of information technology, the importance of books remained intact.
They also lauded the efforts of book fair administration which provided all kinds of books to visitors under single roof on highly discounted rates.
