PTA ordered to remove blasphemous material from Internet

LAHORE - The Lahore High Court on Wednesday ordered the secretary information technology, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), to remove all anti-Islam and blasphemous material from Internet, especially Facebook, Wikipedia and Youtube. Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry passed this order while hearing a petition filed by Azhar Siddique advocate, Chairman Judicial Activism Panel (JAP), for permanent ban on Facebook, a social networking website, which displayed blasphemous material against the Holy Quran and the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Earlier, PTA Director Wireless Mudassar Hussian appearing in the court stated that Facebook authorities through email informed that all blasphemous material against the Quran had been removed and the PTA was making a mechanism for monitoring of objectionable material on internet so that it could be removed as soon it is put on any internet website. Petitioner Muhammad Azhar Siddique challenged the statement of PTA director and said Mudassar was telling a lie in the court as the blasphemous material was still present on the Facebook. Upon this the court ordered the PTA and secretary information technology to remove all objectionable material from internet websites and submit report in three weeks. The counsel sought directions for permanent ban on Facebook in Pakistan for launching blasphemous competition against the Holy Quran. The petitioner submitted Facebook had announced a fresh contest namely Everybody Burn-Quran Day on its pages to hurt sentiments of the Muslims. He said the website had also displayed blasphemous pictures of Khana Kaaba only to distort the image of Islam. The judge adjourned the hearing of the petition for three weeks with directions that the petition be fixed for hearing along with two other petitions on which court had banned Facebook in May this year. Earlier, the petitioner recalled that Facebook website held an unholy contest namely Every Day Draw Muhammad Day for displaying blasphemous caricatures of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) on the website by its users. He said the LHC had banned Facebook in Pakistan on May 19 for the same reasons and later the ban was lifted on May 31 on the assurance of the federal government, ministry of information technology, PTA and the Facebook management that such a mistake will not be repeated in future. Despite assurance to the court the owners of the website did not remove the blasphemous contents from the site and now they launched another unholy competition against Islam, this time targeting the Holy Quran, he said. The petitioner pleaded the ministry of information technology and PTA authorities had failed to monitor and block such contents on websites despite orders of the court. He prayed that unholy act of the Facebook management may be declared illegal, un-Islamic and against the injunctions of Islam and contempt proceedings might be initiated against the owners of the website. He also pleaded the authorities in Pakistan be directed that no material with respect to blasphemy of any religion or Khana Kaaba be published, displayed, visualised or aired in the country.
