LHC bars govt from action against PIDA staff

LAHORE – The Lahore High Court on Tuesday restrained the provincial government from taking any adverse action against employees of Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority (PIDA) seeking regularisation of their contract services.
Justice Mamoonur Rashid also sought report from the chief secretary and other respondents on a petition moved by 51 employees seeking regularisation. Muhammad Rizwan Aslam and 50 other petitioners submitted that the LHC had ordered the Punjab government to give benefit to PIDA employees also on two notifications issued in view of chief minister’s directions regularising contract of employees of various departments.
They said instead of regularising their services, a committee headed by the chief secretary nullified the directions of the LHC and ruled that PIDA employees could not be confirmed.
They pleaded the court to declare the chief secretary’s decision unlawful and direct the government to regularise their service contracts.
The court adjourned the hearing till Jan 10, 2013.
