Police on donkey raid

LAHORE – Police on Friday arrested three donkeys and several persons for betting on the donkey-race in the Shafiqabad police limits.
Police said that several persons were betting on the donkey-race at the Bund Road when they raided the spot on a tip-off. The police also recovered thousands of rupees on bet from the possession of handlers of the donkeys.  More than 13 persons including Amir, Shahbaz, Abdul Jabbar, Irfan, Anwar and Shahzad were caught red-handed. The police took the donkeys and the gamblers to the police station, where they were locked-up. The police have also registered the case and are investigating.  Betting on donkey-race is not unusual in the provincial metropolis. Dozens of persons bet on the donkey-race after midnight at the Bund Road and Canal Road particularly on the weekend. The gamblers put the fixed money on bet and the winner is awarded with the prize soon after the conclusion of the race. The sport is said to be the most favourite game of the poor vendors and donkey-cart handlers residing in the suburb of Lahore.  The gamblers complained that they are frequently arrested and deprived of their belongings including cash by the police under duress for betting on the donkey-race but those influential, who bet on the horses-race are given official protocol at the Lahore Race Club.
