LAHORE – A desperate gangster was gunned down while his accomplice managed to flee when Muhafiz Squad personnel had cross firing with two bandits at Bund Road in Shadbagh police area in the wee hours on Tuesday.
Police investigators believed the deceased dacoit identified as Waheed alias Nangay Paoun was involved in more than 100 armed robberies, rape, killing and other felony acts.
Two armed motorcyclists intercepted two passers-by – Shaukat Butt and Haji Jameel – near Gandi Bambian and held them hostage on gunpoint. “They were busy in snatching, when fortunately four policemen including ASI Arif, Sohail Abbas, Tanvir and Mohsin appeared there,” a senior police officer said, adding the bandits opened indiscriminate gunfire on the law enforcement personnel, who retaliated in the same manner. Meanwhile, heavy police contingents of nearby police stations reached there and joined hands with their Muhafiz Squad personnel. The cross firing continued for 30 minutes, and result in the death of Waheed while his accomplice fled from the scene, taking advantage of the darkness. Three loaded magazine, one pistol, Rs 8,000 cash and two cell phones were collected from the site, while the bullet-riddled body of the deceased bandit was removed to morgue for autopsy.
