lahore - Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Saturday observed Black Day against the martial law imposed by General Ziaul Haq in the country the same day in 1977 overthrowing the elected government of PPP Founder Zulkiqar Ali Bhutto.
The PPP remembers July 5 as the most ominous day when the whole nation was thrown to a long journey of oppression, suppression of fundamental rights and dictatorial dispensation of the vital national interests. The PPP feels pains of July 5 action of Ziaul Haq also for the reason this military man put ZA Bhutto to the gallows through a judicial decision which till date goes as ‘judicial murder’ among ranks and files of this party.
It was again the PPP which mounted resistance against Zia regime when he relegated on his promise of holding election first in 90 days after the takeover then in 1981 and continued to bamboozle the nation through election dreams for eight long years till he held party-less polls in 1985, however, on severe international pressure.
Despite the fact it was Ramzan, the PPP held public meetings, rallies and the processions in various parts of the country. The PPP workers wore black bands and raised black flags in some parts of the country and AJK.
Former president and co-chairman of the PPP, Asif Ali Zardari, in his message on the day said that action of Ziaul Haq destroyed the institutions. He said Bhutto’s execution was a great loss to the nation as such the martial law of Ziaul Haq not only deprived the country of a visionary statesman who adeptly felt pulse of the nation and acted in the national interest but also kept the Paksitanis away from democracy for over a decade.
In the city, the main functions were organised by former MNA Samina Khalid Ghurki and the other by PPP Lawyers Forum at the Lahore High Court Bar Association. The function held at Lahore Press Club was mainly addressed by Senator Ch Aitzaz Ahsan, Mohtarma Shahida Jabeen, Zahid Zulfiqar, Barrister Amir Hassan and others.
