Ijaz Butt in the line of fire

LAHORE Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt faces a challenging next few days as the Sports Ministry may clip his powers for acting unilaterally on certain issues. In the next few days, Butt has to take tough decisions and appoint a captain or captains for the Pakistan Test, ODI and Twenty20 teams. He also faces the task of implementing some strong recommendations of the inquiry committee that was set up to probe the poor performance of the national team in Australia. On another front, his cold relations with the government controlled sports ministry and the National Assembly standing committee on sports continues and on Saturday he again faces the prospect of a grilling from the parliamentary committee on important cricket issues. The committee headed by Jamshed Dasti has summoned Butt and other officials to explain issues including recent statements on the match-fixing and the fact that senior players like Muhammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik openly gave statements against each other in public after returning from Australia. Reports said that sources aware of developments in the Board believe Butt had not helped himself by giving out contradictory statements on the alleged involvement of some players in match-fixing at a recent press conference. Butt first said two players were under investigation for match-fixing and then retracted by stating he was speaking about old cases and not current players also dragging the ICC into the whole affair. His recent decisions of using his discriminatory powers to appoint Waqar Younis and Ijaz Ahmed as coach and assistant coach of the national team and Mohsin Khan as the new chief selector has also not gone down well with the government functionaries. The PCB chairman should have consulted the governing council members specially the new ones inducted into the council while taking such key decisions, Sports Minister Ijaz Jakhrani told reporters. He has again shown a tendency to take unilateral decisions which affect Pakistan cricket directly, he added.
