FIA Gujranwala, Gujrat circles hotbeds of corruption

LAHORE - On the one hand, the FIA is receiving aid from the UNODC (United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime) in the name of elimination of human smuggling, but on the other, financial corruption and mismanagement is on the peak in the department specially in Gujranwala and Gujrat circles, widely known as the hubs of human trafficking, well-placed sources in the agency confided to TheNation.
Recently, huge corruption was unearthed in Gujranwala and Gujrat circles wherein Anti-Human Trafficking Cell Gujranwala Inspector Rana Shahid Hafeez allegedly embezzled Rs13.8 million. As per reports, the officer conducted two raids in Gujranwala, and recovered Rs34 million in one raid but showed only Rs24.2 million in the official record, embezzling the remaining Rs9.8 million.
Whereas in the other raid, he recovered Rs8 million from another money changer, but he showed only Rs4 million in the record. Interestingly, the inspector was only transferred from FIA Gujranwala to FIA Multan over the said charges.
Sources claimed that the FIA Assistant Director, Gujranwala Circle was also allegedly backing the inspector. Two inquiries were initiated in this regard by FIA Punjab Director Dr Usman Anwar, but the accused has been exonerated in one inquiry whereas the other inquiry was underway.
An officer seeking anonymity said that most probably the accused would also be exonerated in the other inquiry as well since he was not suspended before holding inquiry against him. The accused influenced the inquiry by pressuring the complainants and ultimately managed to get rid of it.
It merits mentioning here that the UNODC has given the FIA full assistance including well-equipped vehicles, technologically upgraded offices and other facilities to curb human smuggling. As per the UNODC, 75 per cent of the total human smuggling was originating within the limits of FIA Gujranwala and Gujrat circles. It is the most sensitive part of the country but the FIA management always took it light and posted junior officers there to control human smuggling.
In another incident in the FIA Gujrat circle, a proclaimed offender and accused on Red Book, Syed Zeeshan Hussain Shah managed to escape from the custody of FIA inspector Shahid Majeed and Sub Inspector, Aftab Ahmad. The incident speaks the level of interest, grip and commitment of the FIA staff concerned.
In the recent past in two different incidents, two passengers of A-category deportees managed to slip from two international airports of Lahore and Sialkot by dodging immigration staff on the flights of UK and France, sources claimed.
From Sialkot airport, a passenger managed to travel on a UK-bound flight via Dubai and he was deported by the UK immigration authorities. Taking notice of the incident, the FIA management started inquiry against Inspector Mian Ajmal, Rana Mustehsan, Shazia Bashir, an ASI and a head-constable.
In another incident, a passenger used fake documents and managed to travel from Lahore airport to France. He was deported by French immigration authorities. Following the incident, Sub Inspector Irfan Babar and Constable Haji Manzoor were suspended and inquiry was initiated.
