LAHORE As many as 14 inmates in the Camp Jail and Kot Lakhpat Jail, currently serving different terms including capital punishment, have passed Intermediate examination (supplementary tests) this year with flying colours. Surprisingly, the pass percentage of these candidates remained 90 percent, some 50 percent higher than the regular students of the government-owned institutions. All these prisoner-students have remained involved in heinous crimes, including murders, attempted murders, kidnapping for ransom, rape, gang-rape, and extortion in their pre-jail lives. Some of the result cards available with TheNation show that those in jails beat the students of some reputed educational institutions of the Punjab. They even beat students from the Government College University of the Lahore, of the Punjab University and other colleges and universities. According to details, some of the inmates even got first division. The successful candidates included Zuhaib Athar Butt (Roll # 139010), Khalid, Qasid, Arshad, Wasif, Irfan, Ismail, Irfan Khan, Rashid Bhatti, and Shahbaz. It is worth mentioning here that all of the aforesaid prisoners were jailed under 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code. Six other prisoners, facing death sentence, also appeared in the FA examination and succeeded. They included Hafiz Abdul Rehman, and Shamim. According to the www.biselahore.com/resultintersup website, Zuhaib Athar Butt secured total 587 marks out of 1,100 in Intermediate Part I and II (Supplementary) Examination 2010. According to his result card, the candidate obtained 82 marks in Urdu/Pakistani Culture, 111 in English, 26 in Islamiat, 33 in Pakistan Studies, 105 in Education, 118 in Punjabi, and 112 in Islamic Studies. Kot Lakhpat Jail Superintendent Mushtaq Awan said the jail administration had announced that maximum relaxation would be provided to those prisoners who wished to appear in exams of their related classes. All kinds of punishments including hard work would be suspended for a fixed period if they wanted to teach or learn, the superintendent claimed to had announced for them. Mustaq Awan further says if someone a prisoner wished to learn the holy Quran by heart then his jail punishment would be lifted for the period of two years. Camp Jail Superintendent Gulzar Butt told this scribe that total four prisoners appeared in the FA Supplementary exams out of which three candidates succeeded. He said the jail administration gives priority to jail prisoners with advice to work as teaching staff and in case none of them is educated then proper teachers are hired.
