PU launches tree plantation campaign

LAHORE - Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran launched a tree plantation drive at the varsity by planting a sapling at the Botanical Garden, New Campus, on Friday. Senior officials of the varsity were also present on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor said that it was our national and spiritual responsibility to plant more trees and look after the green reserves to create a better atmosphere and a healthier ecosystem. He said that if endangered tree species like shisham were overlooked, these may be wiped out from the country. That's why he had agreed with Resident Officer-II to plant resistant varieties of shisham too. Talking about the tree plantation campaign, Resident Officer-II Malik Muhammad Zaheer told about the plantation targets that included plantation of more than 6000 tree saplings in the campus. Since the ratio of the forests to the available land in Pakistan is already one of the lowest in the world, it was also agreed that a square-shaped birds sanctuary would also be developed on one-acre land. The Vice-Chancellor intended to plant saplings of shady and flowering trees in collaboration with the forest department.
