Child among 3 comes under acid attack

LAHORE - Three persons of a family sustained  burns after unidentified motorcyclists threw acid on them in Gujjarpura area yesterday.

The injured were shifted to a hospital where their condition was stated to be stable. The victims were identified by police as five-year-old Shama, 40-year-old Sardaran Bibi, and Muhammad Iqbal. 

The victims told the police that they were attacked by their opponents over old enmity. A police officer told

The Nation that a family member of the victims was jailed on murder charges.  He said that the victims in their application had mentioned the names of their opponents. The police were investigating the incident.

Acid is is easily available in the markets, and many victims are attacked after rejecting suitors or as a result of family disputes.  Reportedly, women are the victims in about 80% of acid attacks in the country though the government drafted legislation. As many as 750 Pakistani women fall victim to acid attacks every year according to ABC, leaving them disfigured and socially ostracised.

HAND GRENADE SEIZED

Police and bomb disposal squad yesterday recovered a hand grenade from a dustbin placed on Guru Mangat Road in Ghalib Market police vicinity.

Some garbage-pickers witnessed the device and contacted the police by phone. The bomb disposal squad reached the spot within minutes and managed to defuse the hand grenade. The police were investigating the incident.
