Party axe ready to fall on Qureshi

LAHORE- In an apparent move to pave the way for final action against the former Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, PPP Punjab Parliamentary party on Wednesday recommended suspension of his basic party membership for violation of party discipline. Mr Qureshis recent meeting with PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif at Raiwind seems to have prompted the party to initiate disciplinary action against him. He met elder Sharif on Wednesday and gave a statement in media that party workers had not liked PPP-PML-Q alliance and that he also had reservations about it. If the leadership suspends Shah Mahmoods partys membership, he will be fourth PPP leader to have met such a fate. Basic party membership of Senator Dr. Safdar Abbasi, his spouse, Naheed Khan and Ms Sherry Rehman has already been suspended for violation of party discipline. Senator Abbasi and Ms Rehman were punished for participating in talk shows on a private TV channel in violation of the party decision to boycott that particular channel. Before that she had decided to quit the federal cabinet as a result of differences with party leadership. Naheed Khans membership was suspended for holding a separate party convention on partys 44th foundation day in Lahore. The PPPs Punjab parliamentary party which met here on Thursday with Opposition Leader, Raja Riaz in the chair, recommended to the PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari through a resolution that party membership of Mr Qureshi be suspended as he met Mian Nawaz Sharif without prior approval of the party Co-Chairman. It has been learnt that PPPs top hierarchy has already decided to proceed against Mr Qureshi, also a member of partys CEC, but it wanted some recommendation to this effect from Punjab, the province he belongs to. Qureshi is having estranged relationship with the party high ups since the time he was denied ministry of foreign affairs when he took a tough stance on Raymond Davis issue quite different from that of his party leadership. He was then offered another ministry, but he insisted on having the previous one, and upon refusal, decided to quit the cabinet. Raja Riaz told media after the meeting that Shah Mahmood, who has now objected to PPP-PML-Q alliance, had suggested after 2008 elections to form a coalition government in Punjab with the support of PML-Q. He (Qureshi) then wanted to become Punjab chief minister as he also won a provincial seat in last elections, Raja further said. The opposition leader questioned why Shah Mahmood did not see a group of lotaas from PML-Q forward bloc around the PML-N when he raised objection to PPPs alliance with the PML-Q which was not unconstitutional. Raja warned Shah Mahmood that he should not forget the fate of former Punjab Governor, Ghulam Mustafa Khar and Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, the former care taker PM, who had been left in oblivion after leaving the party.
