LAHORE - Vice Chairman Board of Governors of the Kinnaird College, Eric Massey, on Wednesday assured the students protesting against the raise in fees that they would be facilitated in every way and fee for BBA programme would be reduced. The nine-member students delegation representing the different departments called on Mr Massey to present their charter of demands. Four students were from the BBA programme while others were from Fine Arts department, IR department, Mass Communication department and Economics department. Vice Principal of the college, Dr Nighat Khan, had arranged the meeting and was also present on the occasion. The students were planning to hold a protest demonstration within the premises of college in the morning. They abandoned the plan to stage protest when Dr Khan told them that a meeting had been arranged with the vice chairman of the Board of Governors. Talking to The Nation, the students who attended the meeting said that all their demands were considered. The meeting was held in a very friendly atmosphere. It was like a family meeting and proved to be very productive. Mr Massey was very positive about each demand and listened to us very patiently. He said that the college had raised fees after eight years and it was all due to the development projects. A new block is being constructed while teachers' salaries were increased and many new teachers were appointed. He promised that fee of BBA programme would definitely be reduced. He said it was not possible to reduce the fee for BA programme. But then the college has revived the facility of paying the fee in instalments. "Mr Massey said fee would be waived for students who show excellent results. Those students who cannot afford to pay the fee should submit the application to the college management and their cases would be considered at priority and they would be provided relief," the students said. They said that the vice principal had told them that the college would further facilitate the students with regard to payment of fees. "The last date for payment of fees is May 10. Dr Nighat has said that a notification would be issued on May 10 for extension of last date for submission of fees till May 17. This would provide relief to the students," the students were of the view. "The vice chairman has promised to consider all our demands. Air-conditioned computer lab and common room for students would be ensured and power generators would also be installed. He has assured that steps would be taken to ensure improvement in the facilities for students. He said members of the Board of Governors were available anytime we may ask to listen to our problems and issues," they said. The students said that the exact reduction in the fee of BBA students would be decided on the return of Principal Dr Mira Phailbus from abroad. She is expected to arrive in a week's time. Meanwhile, the students have assured Mr Massey and Dr Khan that no protest would be held within the college or outside it as most of their demands have been accepted.
