Pakistan, India mull home and away series

LAHORE - The newly-appointed ad-hoc committee of the Indian Hockey Federation has expressed interest in playing home and away series against Pakistan after the Beijing Olympics. The last bilateral series between the two countries was held in 2006. The IHF is currently run by an ad-hoc body following the dissolution of the KPS Gill-led body by the Indian Olympic Association. A PHF official said on Wednesday that during their interaction with the ad-hoc body of the IHF, a senior member expressed interest in holding bilateral series with Pakistan on regular basis. The PHF officials said Pakistan was also looking for a series with their neighbours. "The Indians were informed that Pakistan, after playing Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia this month, will travel to Europe for a series of matches in Germany, France and Belgium before participating in the four-nation hockey tournament in Dublin in June. Afterwards, the national team will hold a camp for its final preparations for the Olympics," the PHF official said. Eight times Olympic champions India failed to qualify for Olympic Games for the first time in 80 years. And their neighbours Pakistan, though qualified for Olympics, but have failed to stem the downward slide. Pakistan hockey has also suffered due to refusal of foreign teams to tour the country on security grounds. The embattled Indians miserably lost in two tournaments in Australia. There have also been reports that the FIH could strip them of hosting rights of 2010 World Cup. The PHF further said that details of the series would be finalised after the Beijing Olympics.
