PU hostels closed, exams postponed

LAHORE - Following the unrest allegedly created by a group of students in Punjab University, all the PU hostels will be vacated on Friday (today) till further orders. However, this decision will not be applicable to the resident students of foreign countries. Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran stated this while presiding over a meeting of the university deans, principals of colleges and senior administrative officers at the New Campus here on Thursday. According to the spokesman of the varsity, the semester exams falling on the dates during the closure period of hostels have also been postponed. However the deficiency in studies caused due to the on-going strike call by the Academic Staff Association will be made up by the faculty with extra classes. The participants of the meeting also paid glowing tributes to Dean, Principal College of Pharmacy Prof Dr Muhammad Jamshaid on his outstanding services and contribution to the college of Pharmacy who will retire from service with effect from Friday (today). Meanwhile the office-bearers and members of Academic Staff Association (ASA) Punjab University took out a protest rally on The Mall in front of the College of Art and Design. The protestors were carryings banners and placards inscribed with slogans for the arrest of IJT workers nominated in the FIR. The participants also demanded of the Punjab Government for earliest apprehension of the nominated culprits and restoration of academic peace in the campus. It is worth mentioning here that certain student inflicted tortures on a professor at PU a couple of days back over a petty issue. Earlier Prof Dr Mehr Saeed Akhtar presided over a general body meeting decided that all the countrys universities would observe black day on April 13 to protest against the incident of violence against Prof Iftikhar Baloch. General Secretary Javed Samee were also present on the occasion. At the outset of the meeting all the professors felicitated Dr Mehr Saeed Akhtar on having been elected as President Federation of Academic Staff Association. Dr Akhtar informed the members that faculty of universities across the country would wear black bands and stage protest rallies against the severe injuries caused to Prof Iftikhar Baloch.
