Chenab may play havoc

LAHORE Though all major rivers are flowing well below danger level at the present stage, heavy rains in the catchment areas during the next couple of days could cause flood of medium to high level in River Chenab at Marala, the experts say. Because of this, the dry lands of the province especially district Bahawalnagar, where less rainfall have made little or even no impact for decreasing the dryness of the land, but with rising water in the Chenab would certain increase the water level in the soil beds. However, the rising water in Chenab may also play havoc with sown crop in the villages adjacent to the river besides displacing huge number of people. As the prevailing wet spell is likely to continue and even intensify during the coming days, inflow at major rivers and their tributaries will increase considerably, which means filling of reservoirs and at the same time more miseries for the people residing in cities, towns and villages in the close vicinities of water channels. According to the flood forecasting division, River Chenab at Khanki and River Ravi at Balloki are in low flood level while all other rivers are flowing below flood level. During the next couple of days, Deg, Basantar, Palku, Hasri and Bhed nullas are likely to attain medium to high flood level that will affect parts of Narowal, Sialkot and Gujrat districts.
