CJ sets remarkable precedent

LAHORE -  At a time when most people are hungry for publicity and miss no opportunity to stay in the limelight by whatever means, Lahore High Court Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah has set a different precedent.

Justice Shah yesterday inaugurated an auditorium named after Dr Javed Javed, a former chief justice, in the presence of judges, lawyers and family members of the late CJ. But he proposed that the plaque should not mention his name but “Chief Justice, Lahore High Court” only.

“Institutions are important, not individuals. We should try to strengthen the institutions,” said the CJ, who is praised by the lawyers’ community because of his bold judgments.

Justice Shah said he was happy that the auditorium was being inaugurated during the 150 years of LHC’s celebrations. He underlined the need for more coordination between the bar and the bench and said instead of shutting courts the two sides should sit together after court hours and settle all issues.

The CJ said provision of quick justice should be the real target before the judges and lawyers.

Family members of Dr Javed Iqbal, including Justice (r) Nasira Javed Iqbal, Barrister Waleed Iqbal and Muneeb Iqbal, were present on the occasion.
