LAHORE : The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) shut down grid stations in Lahore as dense fog gripped the city and other parts of Punjab on Friday morning.
The power supply was suspended around 11:00pm on Thursday, plunging the whole district into darkness.
In the morning, suspension of power supply affected the supply of water while people, especially students, faced inconvenience in getting ready for their routine activities owing to the power outage and thick fog.
In January this year, the fog had caused Lahore’s 220KV grid stations to trip, leaving most parts of the city without power.
Early morning, the fog made it difficult for the motorists even to move a few meters as the visibility was so poor that they had to switch on headlights.
Reportedly, 21 people have been injured in road accidents.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) early Friday morning announced to close Allama Iqbal International Airport till 10 am on the back of heavy fog that descended on Lahore.
Flights scheduled to land in Lahore were rerouted to Karachi's Jinnah International Airport. A Lahore-bound private flight, set to take off from Karachi, was also halted, forcing around 170 passengers to spend night at the airport lounge.
Overall, around 20 local and international flights were affected due to the airport closure. Partial flight operations were allowed after 10 AM from Allama Iqbal airport.
Meanwhile, traffic was suspended on Lahore-Pindi Bhattiya section of the motorway on grounds of zero visibility.
