CM wants new IGP to change 'thana culture

LAHORE Newly-appointed Inspector General Punjab Police Javed Iqbal called on Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif here on Saturday. Talking on this occasion, the Chief Minister said the protection of life and property of people and provision of immediate and cheep justice was top priority of the government, and no effort should be spared in this regard. He said that change in Thana culture should be made as a source of provision of justice and haven of peace. He said such atmosphere should be created in police stations where poor and common people could go for getting justice and help without any fear. He further said besides equipping police force with modern equipments and latest training, all facilities had also been provided to it and now police should ensure provision of justice to the people without any discrimination. We have provided resources and increased the salaries of the police even by reducing our necessary expenses and now it is the responsibly of the police to come up to the expectations of the people and provide them justice on their doorstep, he said, while assigning the special task of eradication of crimes of kidnapping for ransom from the province to the new IGP. He directed him ensure effective action against the gangs involved in such crimes and a special cell comprising of highly experienced and professional officers should be set up for this purpose. Elimination of corruption should be ensured and strict accountability system in police should be adopted, he added. The CM asked him to utilise all his professional abilities for bringing change in Thana culture, provision of justice to the people and promotion of community policing. Javed Iqbal assured the CM that he would try his level best to come up to the confidence reposed in him, and would utilise all his capabilities for bringing change in Thana culture, curbing crimes, supremacy of merit and purging the department of corruption. Action Directed against wheelies The Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) SSP Syed Ahmad Mobin directed traffic officers/wardens to initiate strict action against the motorcyclists involved in wheelie in different parts of the City on Saturday. Sources in traffic police revealed the SSP also snubbed the SP Traffic Sadar and SP Traffic City Division over their poor performance in this regards. He however directed them to constitute special teams in their respective areas and utilize all the available resources to weed out the dangerous practice of wheelie. Ahmed Mobin said the youth is precious asset of the nation and the traffic wardens/officials should ensure their safety from such accidents. SSP said that alert groups of wardens have been deputed at The Mall, Jail Road, Model Road Ferozepur Road, Main Boulevard, Defence and other important arteries of the City. The wardens have further been directed to take strict action against this practice without any discrimination. The CTO also appealed all the parents to extend their cooperation with city traffic police to root out this practice.
