Judge bears the brunt of judicial harassment

LAHORE (Mian DAWOOD) - Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial has suspended a senior civil judge over harassing a woman litigant, an official says.
Faisalabad Senior Civil Judge Rafaqat Ali Gondal has been made officer on special duty (OSD) in the LHC over the complaint of Chanda Bibi whose case was pending before his court.
She had requested the Member Inspection Team (MIT) of LHC to take notice of the civil judge’s conduct and take action against him. Quoting the complaint of the woman, the official, privy to the development, said the judge had kept on calling the woman on her cell phone despite repeated warnings. She alleged that the judge wanted to have ‘relations’ between them.
The MIT started probe into the woman’s allegations and the judge admitted in his reply that he had made calls twice or thrice on her cellphone in response a missed call from her number, the official added.
He said the judge’s case would be forwarded to administrative committee (AC) of the LHC for further action.
Also, the LHC has been demanded through a constitutional petition to issue directions to the Election Commission of Pakistan for strict enforcement of article 62 of the Constitution to stop the way of corrupt and bad character persons from becoming members of the parliament.
Petition has been moved by Lawyers Foundation for Justice and Democracy through counsel AK Dogar.
The petitioner says persons of good conduct and having good moral character should only be allowed to participate in the general elections.
He states that the article 62 of the Constitutional had laid down the principle for the candidates and it should be strictly followed in case of nomination of a candidate.
He states under the Constitution every one could not be allowed to contest the general election. He says the selection of candidates according to the constitution will also help in improving the system and saving the national exchequer.
