‘Unesco award on Shahi Hammam a big feat’

LAHORE - The Walled City of Lahore Authority and Aga Khan Culture Services Pakistan stated that winning of Unesco Award for Shahi Hammam (Royal Bath) was a big achievement.

The representatives of WCLA and AK-CS were talking to the media yesterday.

Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan Senior Architect and Consultant Rashid Makhdum said: “It was the long process when we filed and nominated for the award. Previously one of the streets inside Delhi Gate, Gali Surjan Sing received this award.”

He said that there is a strong chance that the ongoing projects like Wazir Khan Mosque, Wazir Khan Square and Picture Wall of Lahore Fort will also be award winning projects.

It was also briefed that in very near future the team of Unesco will visit Shahi Hammam and holds a celebration.

Spokesperson for Walled City of Lahore Authority Tania Qureshi briefed the media about the partnership with Aga Khan Trust for culture. She said that such world class conservation would not have been possible without the efforts and technical assistance of Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan.

She explained that the project of Royal Trail, Conservation of Wazir Khan Mosque, Picture Wall and Royal Kitchen of Lahore Fort are being carried out with the partnership of Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan and in future more projects including the Master Conservation Plan of Walled City will also be done with their partnership and technical assistance.

Kamran Lashari said, “The partnership will go a long way and WCLA aim at a speedy restoration of our heritage.”
