LAHORE - A local citizen filed a petition in the Lahore High Court against 55 per cent tax on petroleum products.
The petitioner submitted that the government was increasing oil prices while the rate of oil products in international markets was decreasing.
The recent decrease in POL prices by the government was like a fun with the nation, he submitted. The petitioner said the government instead of giving any relief to the public was burdening it with more inflation. He prayed to the court to set aside 55 per cent tax on the POL prices.
PIC case verdict reserved: The Lahore High Court yesterday reserved verdict on a petition challenging alleged irregularities in purchase of medicines at Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) of Lahore.
Opposition leader in Punjab Assembly Mian Mehmood-ur-Rasheed had filed the petition. He pointed out that he would bring on record what level of corruption and malpractices of the provincial government were being done at PIC.
He pointed out that a private medical store had been awarded contract for bulk purchase of medicines and medical disposable items.
However, the medical store was violating the terms and conditions of the contract and providing medicines to the PIA on double rates as compared with market price.
He further submitted that the medical store was committing this unlawful act in connivance of the government authorities concerned.
He said Public Accounts Committee was responsible to hold scrutiny of the public departments; however, the committee was non-functional since 2013.
He prayed to the court to order the chief minister to hold inquiry into the corruption and stop sale of medicine against high rates.
He also prayed to the court to order the government to present details of the contract of PIC concluded with the respondent medical store before the PAC for the scrutiny.
