'N gears up to face mighty opposition in PA session

LAHORE - The Punjab Assemblys 23rd session will be held on Friday (tomorrow) at 3pm, as PML-N is gearing up to face a strong opposition after parting ways with the PPP. During the upcoming session, Punjab lawmakers are expected to vote in favour of crucial changes to be made in the Punjab Local Government Ordinance 2001 and Punjab Revenue Act 1967 to take out revenue department from the ambit of district governments. The provincial cabinet which met on Tuesday approved changes in the two laws, which is being considered a first major step towards restoration of old system of district magistracy. The post of EDO (Revenue) at the district level is being abolished while the posts of DO (Revenue) DDO (Revenue) and ADO (Revenue) will be re-designated and placed under the direct control of the Commissioners already working under Punjab government. Fridays session is also significant from another aspect too. Punjab Assembly will witness PPP playing the role of Opposition after remaining a part of the Treasury in the same House for three years. PPPs Raja Riaz has already been notified as leader of the Opposition in place of Ch Zaheeruddin of PML-Q. The PPPs parliamentary party has also been allocated seats on the opposition benches. In the changed situation where PPP and PML-Q will have several issues to agitate at this forum, the assembly proceeding is less likely to remain smooth during the coming session. The two parties are all set to give tough time to the PML-N for its support to the Unification Bloc. The trouble is expected even before start of the session if the Speaker invited Dr Tahir Ali Javed to attend the meeting of business advisory council as parliamentary leader of his group. The said council comprises parliamentary leaders of different parliamentary parties in the assembly and is held to discuss assembly agenda and to devise any agreed procedure to run the House. The PML-N is also in the process of devising counter strategy to deal with the new situation. Meanwhile, the assembly secretariat has issued the schedule for Question Hours. The House will take up questions pertaining to various departments in the following order. Prison department (March11), Higher Education (March14), Environment (March15), S&GAD (March16), P&D (March17), Health (March18), C&W (March21), Excise & Taxation (March22), Irrigation & Power (March24), LG&CD (March25), Housing & Urban Development & Public Health Engineering (March28), Industries, Commerce & Investment (March29), Home (March30), Agriculture (March31) and Zakat, Usher & Bailtul Maal (April1).
