LAHORE – The Lahore High Court on Wednesday issued notices to Shumaila Rana, a newly nominated member of Punjab Assembly on reserved seat for women and Election Commission on a petition challenging her renomination. Petitioner Adeeba Ashraf, who is also a worker of PML-N, has challenged the nomination of Ms Rana under the Article 224 and 226 of the Constitution. The petitioner contended that Shumaila did not fulfil the criteria given under aforesaid articles therefore she could not be nominated as an MPA on seats reserved for women. The signatures of Ms Rana on nomination papers were fake and the ECP had also not scrutinised her papers, the petitioner pointed out, pleading that Ms Rana could not be re-nominated for the MPA seat.                –Staff Reporter
The nomination of all women parliamentarians on reserved seats was unconstitutional under Article 224 and 226, she said.
She requested the court to turn down the nomination of Ms Rana and declare her disqualified. Justice Umar Ata Banidal recorded the initial arguments and issued notices to respondents to file reply till May 28.
