ISLAMABAD - The Director Kashmir Centre Washington and the Chief of US-based Kashmiri American Council (KAC), Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, has said that the international community has no choice but to strengthen and support the people of Kashmir provided that the peaceful and indigenous character of the ongoing mass movement remains intact. The statement of US President Baraak Obama is the acceptance of Kashmiris principled stance and rejection of Indias contention that Kashmir was internal matter of India, the KAC Chief said this while addressing a press conference here on Wednesday. While analysing the Obamas statement on Kashmir, Dr Fai said that it was quite significant saying that it was not really a deviation from their policy. Right from the day one Americas Kashmir policy has been quite consistent and they have said it time and again that Kashmir is a disputed territory and the issue has to be decided in accordance with the wish and will of the people, he said adding that he could have maintained silence over the issue but it would have given totally a different message that the US does not really care about Kashmir. Regarding Indias bid for the UNSCs permanent seat, he said that Obama has very rightly said that though India has right to be the member of the highest world body but it has to have a special responsibility. Though Obama did not define those liabilities but he in his speech clearly indicated that there are some obligations, responsibilities and international commitments that have to be fulfilled. The KAC Chief was under the impression that it was the duty of Kashmiri leadership to let the world know what those responsibilities and commitments are, which India made vis--vis the resolution of Kashmir issue. He was of the view that the country that has violated the international covenants has no justification whatsoever to be a member of UNSC. One cannot even aim and claim for the UNSC permanent seat while violating the highest bodys agreements, he said. Terming Afghanistan as the single most national security issue for America, he said that to resolve this issue the US knows it fully well that it could not be materialised without the support of Pakistan. For that matter, he said that the US would really like to see peace on eastern boarders of Pakistan which was possible only if the Kashmir dispute was resolved peacefully. About the dialogue process, the KAC Chief said that there was a dire need to define the parameters, besides including Kashmiri leadership in the talks process. He, however, maintained that the impact of peace talks should be seen on ground and the very important thing was to keep intact the peaceful and indigenous nature of movement. Quoting the names of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Ahmed Shah, Yasin Malik and Syed Salahudin, he said that they have unanimously expressed their desire to get engaged in a meaningful dialogue if India was ready to accept Kashmir as a dispute territory. He said that there was a consensus among these leaders that India should accept the reality and the reality, he said, was that Kashmir has never been the integral part of India. He said that it was very unfortunate that despite tall claims India has never paid attention to Kashmiris contention.
