Plea for referendum over Kala Bagh Dam

LAHORE - A constitutional petition was filed yesterday in the Supreme Court registry, seeking directions for the federal government to hold a national level referendum over the matter of Kala Bagh Dam’s construction.
Barrister Zafarullah Khan of Watan Party had filed the petition, saying: “The government, Council of Common Interest and political parties do not want to build Kala Bagh Dam.”
The petitioner maintained the government had badly failed to comply with the orders regarding construction of Kala Bagh Dam. “The entire country has plunged into darkness due to not building this dam,” he added.
He further stated that huge amount of water was being wasted every year which could have been saved if the dam had been there. The agricultural land, he submitted, was losing its fertility due to lack of water while the labourers of the industrial units were losing their jobs.
He said a referendum at the national level can help determine the will of people regarding construction of this dam.
