PPP pays tributes to Benazir Bhutto

LAHORE - The PPP leaders on Wednesday paid rich tributes to former party chairperson, Benazir Bhutto, as her son and party chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari received UN human rights award the same day in New York, posthumously awarded to the slain party leader in recognition of her services in the said field. A good number of party leaders and workers gathered at the shrine of Hazrat Ali Hajveri (Data Darbar) and recited Holy Quran for the departed soul of their leader. They also lit candles to remember Benazir Bhutto's services she rendered for the cause of democracy, promotion of world peace and struggle for human rights. Senior Punjab Minister Raja Riaz, party's Lahore President Azizur Rehman Chan, Samiulla Khan, Zekria Butt, Irfan Khokar and other local leaders were prominent on the occasion. The event was also aimed at observing "day of determination" to celebrate granting of UN award to late Benazir Bhutto, as party leaders in their brief speeches on the occasion, vowed to accomplish their leader's mission to establish true democracy in the country. They believed that former party chairperson sacrificed her life while struggling against dictatorship with the underlying objective of restoring democratic rights of countrymen. It was a matter of great pride for entire nation that UN body has bestowed its most prestigious award to Benazir Bhutto in apperception of her struggle for people's rights, the PPP leaders observed, while lamenting the fact that democracy had never been allowed to take roots in the country due to frequent military interventions in politics.
