Nurses need nursing

LAHORE - Like other parts of the world, International Nurses Day will be observed across the country on Monday (today) to mark the contributions nurses make to society.
The day is observed on May 12 every year, birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing.
Nursing is a profession focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life. Nurses can be differentiated from other health care providers by their approach to patient care, training, and scope of practice.
Functions will be arranged at public sector and private nursing schools and hospitals to mark the day.
Post Graduate Medical Institute and Lahore General Hospital arranged a function on Sunday for paying tributes to nurses for their services for the suffering humanity.
Speaking at the function, Principal PGMI Prof Anjum Habib Vohra said that nurses bring message of life and hope for patients and their role in fighting diseases and epidemics can never be ignored. He said that trained nurses are a valuable asset not only for their hospitals but also for the society. He urged nurses to sensitize public regarding preventive measures against dengue, polio and other menaces. He said that nurses serve the humanity keeping themselves above any kind of discrimination. He said that nurses should consider Florence Nightingale their role model but they must not forget those great Muslim women who helped the injured during wars fought by under the command of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He stressed upon the nurses to play such an exemplary role that other girls may feel proud to join this noble profession. He said that modern health delivery system cannot complete without nurses.
Other speakers also urged nurses to serve with more efficiency, dedication and devotion, not only in healing the wounds of injured patients but also in health education sector. The nursing students demanded to award Tamgha e Shujaat to Asma Kanwal, a nurse martyred while fighting dengue. They also kindled the lamps and pledged to continue their pious mission with full passion.
