Army comes in as dengue goes berserk

OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE As the dengue menace went beyond the reach of the Punjab government, 486 new cases were reported in the City on Sunday. Thus the day got the highest number of cases. Meanwhile, a 16-year-old boy lost his fight against the fever at Lahore General Hospital Lahore. According to a Health Department report, out of 486 people tested positive, 277 were hospitalised while the remaining were sent home. A spokesman said 3,300 persons have been tested positive during the current year. The surge in patients has forced the Army to step in and make necessary arrangements for diagnosis and treatment of civilians in Cantonment areas. The Army has set up a 100-bed ward at the CMH for the purpose. Meanwhile, the PMA, YDA and Family Physicians have suggested the government to allocate 50pc of the 5,500 beds at 21 teaching hospitals of 11 private medical colleges for dengue patients. The call was given at a meeting held here with Hamza Shahbaz. The PML-Q leadership has also jumped in the scene and started leveling allegations of neglect against arch rival PML-N. Allegations from Q leader Pervaiz Elahi also caused Law Minister Sanaullah to level counter allegations. Talking at State Guest House, Ch Pervaiz Elahi said the government has miserably failed and Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif as responsible for the present situation.
