LAHORE - Wrangling in the Punjab chapter of the Awami National Party became evident the other day when disciplinary action was taken against two provincial office-bearers. They were earlier expelled from the party for ten years on charges of working against the partys interests on behest of the MQM. The provincial Working Committees meeting in Sialkot on Sunday had decided to suspend the basic membership of the partys Punjab Vice-President Nasir Mahmood and Deputy Secretary Rizwan Zafar for their objectionable activities. The duo later held a news conference in Lahore and announced that they were going to suspend the party membership of ANPs Central Secretary General Ehsan Wyne, a decision which they were not authorised to take. Central Secretary Information Zahid Khan, when contacted, expressed his ignorance about the distressing development taking place in Punjab. He, however, said that nobody could suspend the membership of any office-bearer without the prior approval of the partys central command. When asked about the status of the 'suspended officer-bearers, Khan said they were still in the party. Everybody cannot cancel party membership of any other member, he affirmed, while also uttering similar remarks about the alleged suspension of party membership of Mr Ehsan Wyne, saying that he was holding a senior position in the party and only the party head could remove him. He said party will take notice of bickering among party men in Punjab when the matter is brought into the notice of partys top leadership. Partys Punjab President Dr. Zulfiqar Qureshi questioned the position taken by Zahid Khan on the issue claiming that provincial working committee was fully authorized to suspend membership of its provincial office bearers without seeking prior approval from the top. Dr. Zulfiqar alleged that Zahid Khan was saying so because of his personal friendship with Nasir Mahmood and Rizwan Zafar. He further told this scribe that party had taken disciplinary action against the two as they had joined another faction of the ANP led by Fareed Tofaan. He further alleged that the two had arranged a telephonic address of the Mr Tofaan at their residence for a handful of party workers and had been expelled from the party for 10 years. He said that they were damaging the party along with Fareed Tufaan, a former provincial secretary general of ANP, on behest of MQM. Condemning their act of holding news conference against Ehsan Wyne, he said he (Wyne) was partys central secretary general and only party president could take any disciplinary action against him. He alleged that MQM was trying to make dissensions in ANP to weaken the party. Talking about meeting of the provincial working committee, he said it was also attended by partys central Secretary General Ehsan Wyne and Asfandyar Walis coordinator, Rasool Khan. He said that Fareed Tofaan and a former federal minister Muhammad Khan Hoti had made a limited company to hijack the ANP, but, we wont allow them to do so. Talking to TheNation about his alleged suspension of party membership, Ehsan Wyne said that provincial office holders had no authority to suspend his party membership. He further said that Mr Nasir Mahmood and Rizwan Zafar had a grudge against him as he was part of the meeting of provincial working committee which suspended their membership for 10 years.
