Punjab govt to present third budget tomorrow

LAHORE - The coalition government in Punjab will present its third budget on Monday (tomorrow) for the fiscal year 20010-11 with major focus on health, education sectors and welfare projects. In this regard, a meeting of the provincial cabinet will be held on Monday morning to approve the budget for the fiscal year 2008-09. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif will preside over the cabinet meeting. Provincial Finance Minister Tanvir Ashraf Kaira will present the budget in the Punjab Assembly shortly after its approval by the cabinet. According to sources, the government is likely to allocate above Rs 200 billion for ADP for the fiscal year 2010-11 while the total outlay is expected to be above Rs 600 billion. The budget session of the Punjab Assembly will start on Monday afternoon. The salient features of the budget would be huge allocation for completion of ongoing development schemes, energy projects, Sasti Roti scheme, and increase in salaries of government employees in the budget. Sources privy to the budget making process believe the government is likely to allocate huge funds for the law and order after health and education. A tax-free and pro-poor budget has been finalised and the government will ensure the budget will be welfare-oriented in real terms, the sources added. The government will also announce austerity measures in the budget to reduce non-development expenditure, enhance the tax base, curtail corruption and enforce good governance plans. Creation of job opportunities by imparting training to youths, supply of clean drinking water and improvement in the drainage system and development of the agriculture sector will also be part of the budget. The government will also spell out priority areas where the additional resources, which the Punjab province would get through the NFC Award, will be spent. The amount will be utilised mainly for infrastructure programmes and public welfare policies, the sources maintained.
