Women MPs cry over ‘discrimination’

LAHORE - Punjab Assembly women members yesterday raised hue and cry over discrimination with the female MPs while dealing minor rules of the house by the chair.

Assembly Speaker Rana Iqbal had directed woman MP Dr Farzana Nazeer to leave the house for five minutes for disturbing the proceedings through her non-participatory conduct.

The incident took place when Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah was replying to a Call Attention Notice.

But another woman member Tehseen Fawad reminded the chair to summon Dr Nazeer for joining the proceedings after 20 minutes. On the return of Dr Nazeer to the house, the women members questioned the chair why rules were ignored when male members violate them.

However the dust settled in few minutes after the registration of protest by the women members.

During question hour on Transport and Information & Culture Departments, parliamentary secretary on transport Nawaz Chohan told the house that the provincial government has provided cards to the senior citizens for free travel in public transport.

No private transport service can over capacitate the vehicle and overcharge the passenger. The transporters fail to follow the rules on this count can face fines and cancellation of route permits.

Parliamentary secretary on information Rana Arshad told the house that cultural festivals under the title of ‘Sohna Punjab’ would be organised at divisional and district level this year.

Punjab Law Minister replying to a Call Attention Notice concerning killing of a ruling party MP in a robbery told the house that killers of Rana Shamshad and his son in an armed robbery were killed in a police encounter in Gujranwala.

Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Mian Mehmood-ur-Rasheed on this point said that Rana Shamshad got justice because he was member of this house but a common citizen could not get justice.

The proceedings adjourned for today at 9am.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader led a protest concerning Panama Papers held in front of Punjab Assembly at Chairing Cross and demanded a transparent and neutral commission following the recommendations of the opposition parties in parliament.

“The days of the ruling party are numbered. The rulers would be pushed out of the power if they didn’t step down voluntarily after being named in Panama Papers,” he said while addressing the participants.

The placards carried by the participants inscribed with warnings and demands which said, “Rulers must resign over Panama Papers or face a countrywide movement of the opposition. Corrupt must held accountable for their deeds. Panama Papers stained rulers unacceptable.”
