LAHORE – PIA chairman will appear in the Supreme Court on Monday on holding more than one office in violation of the PIA rules, said an officer of the national flag career on Saturday. He said that Lt Gen (r) Asif Yasin Malik was not only holding offices of the PIA chairman and the defence secretary but also heads the PIA-IL, chairman of the CAA and of many other companies. “He also appointed Capt Junaid Younas as MD on political grounds, who is a Boeing 777 pilot.” Sources in the PIA say that the chairman is a busy man and only visit PIA head office once a week and no important decisions are being taken due to his tight schedule. A PIA senior officer said that management was portraying wrong facts and figures only to show the financial health of the airline but actually in the last quarter of 2012, it suffered a loss of Rs7 billion. An engineer said that due to non availability of spare parts of the planes, 20 planes were grounded and some of them were in hangers.  A Dubai based company has refused to supply more spare parts to the PIA due to non payment. Political influence on transfer and posting was evident from the fact that current MD Captain Junaid Younas completed his journey of promotion from general manager to the managing director within a span of 18 months, said a PIA officer. PIA spokesman Mashood Tajwar said that the matter was in the Supreme Court therefore he could not comment on it. However, he said that there were not 20 planes grounded but only six while rest of them were grounded for routine check. He said that all problems could be solved, if new planes are purchased.
