LAHORE - The Lahore High Court Monday issued notice to National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) and others on petition a petition challenging the levy of new electricity surcharge.
Judicial Activism Panel’s chairman Advocate Azhar Siddique filed the petition saying the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) had been working as a government institution instead of an independent one and protecting government interests.
He said Nepra imposed a new surcharge of Rs 110 million under the name of “gas development surcharge”, which was initially to be collected from the power supply companies, but had been conveniently been laid upon the consumers. The petitioner asked the court to set aside the levy of the surcharge for being illegal.
After initial arguments of the petitioner’s counsel, Justice Ijazul Ahsan issued notice to both parties including Nepra and adjourned the hearing until July 16
Bail dismissed: The Supreme Court Monday dismissed bail petition of a Christian man allegedly involved in murder of his daughter and her husband for contracting marriage without the consent of the family.
Liaqat Masih, suspect, had filed the bail application at SC Lahore registry and submitted through his counsel that he had no role in the murder of his daughter Shahtaj and son in-law Shafique. The counsel said the suspect had just invited the couple to his house on the day of incident.
A public prosecutor told the court that the suspect had invited the murdered couple to his house and other suspects Nadeem and other killed both.
He said challan against the suspects including Liaqat, Nadeem had been submitted in the trial court.
He said two of the suspects were still at large. The prosecutor said the trial of the suspects was in progress and many judgments of superior courts discouraged grant of bail at this stage.
After hearing both sides, the bench dismissed bail application.
