Civil society urged to oppose extremism

LAHORE Justice (r) Nasira Javed Iqbal has urged the civil society and commoners to come forward to oppose extremists, saying the country is legacy of moderates but hardliners want to occupy it in the name of religion. Addressing to a condolence reference held to pay tribute to former federal minister for minorities affairs Shahbaz Bhatti at Naulakha Church here on Sunday, Nasira said Bhatti wanted to see the country according to Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnahs vision where no one be discriminated in the name of religion or ethnicity. She said some religious segments strongly opposed the concept of Pakistan at the time of Pakistan Movement but now they claimed themselves as owner of the country. Paying tribute to Shahbaz Bhatti, she said he was a deliberate person and man of principles who always fought for his people. He said this was the time to get ready for resistance against the extremists. On the occasion, Member Punjab Assembly Najmi Saleem said Shahbaz Bhatti was not only representative of minorities but he was also ambassador of Pakistan who lost his life for image building of the country and that was why he was paid tribute on national and international level. She said he had done a lot for his community which would always be remembered, adding he had become a permanent source of inspiration and courage for the Christian community. While speaking on the occasion, Mubashir Luqman said Bhatti had the offers to shift to any other country but he liked to live here and serve Pakistan and his community. He said he loved his mission who never feared despite life threats. Other speakers including Dr Kanwal Feroz, Nasir Ziadi, Joseph Frances, Dr Yousaf, Pervez Rafiq, Naeem Shakir and others also paid rich tribute to late Shahbaz Bhatti and admired his services for the Christian community and country. Later, a vigil was organised and participants of the reference prayed for his soul for eternal peace.
