LAHORE Principal MAO College Arif Hussain has admitted facts regarding the appointment of a psychologist as head of the Mass Communication Department, and conducting of entry tests not according to the dates mentioned in the advertisements published twice in national dailies.
As per the 'corrigendum issued here on Tuesday, which was aimed contradicting news and 'to bring forward facts for publication, the Principal averred that Prof.
Tauqeer Saleem Khan of the Psychology department has been deputed to hold this responsibility (Head Mass Communication Department) by virtue of his past experience in journalism.
However, the Principal did not mention whether the Prof was qualified to hold the portfolio or not.
Secondly, the incumbents 'past experience did not carry any qualification as well, that is, there is no mention of what qualified the Prof to head the Department.
Thirdly, the Principal has admitted that all other academic and teaching matters are looked after by the Department faculty itself.
Now the question is: if the academic and teaching matters are being looked after by the faculty, then what was the use of appointing another man in gross violation of the Higher Education Commission rules? The Principal further admits of inherent weaknesses in the Departments working when the 'corrigendum states that for the Department established in 2003 and MA classes started on regular and self-finance basis qualified faculty was hired invariably on daily wages from the local mass media on wages of per lecture basis for a period of six months of the academic session every year.
The Principal/Head of Institution himself looked after the administrative affairs of the Department or by any regular teacher nominated by him.
However, neither the Principal nor the nominated teacher was given any teaching assignment in the Department.
It means that neither an effort was made nor anyone qualified was allowed to run the affairs of the Department, and 'novelty interferences by novices with certificate experiences were allowed to temper the quality of education.
In the same vein, the Principal has accepted the fact that the College is yet to hire faculty when he stated: Regarding the launching of BS Mass Communication 4 years programme, separate teaching staff will be provided by the Government and the BoG of the College have been empowered to recruit the teaching and non-teaching staff.
About the entry tests, the Principal said the new dates were notified on the College Notice Board and informed the candidates.
600 of them appeared in the test.
However, he admitted only five/six left over candidates, who failed to appear in the test, have been allowed to reappear.
However, people concerned have serious reservations about the figures.
