Poverty-stricken lady reporter commits suicide


LAHORE – A 26-year-old lady reporter committed suicide by jumping down from the fourth storey of a private hostel located in Islampura area, police said on Wednesday.
Police sources believed that the poverty-stricken lady reporter, identified as Seemab Bibi, got disillusioned since the management of a local Urdu newspaper (Anti-Crime) had been denying salary payments to her for the last several months.
The resident of Narang Mandi, Seemab, suffered multiple fractures and head injuries, shortly after she crashed on the road down below. She was rushed to a local hospital but died on the way.
Police sources said Seemab had been working as lady reporter with an Urdu newspaper, having very limited circulation, in Lahore. She was also studying privately to complete her graduation.
Local residents said her father had been suffering from cancer and she had desperately needed money for his treatment. They further told the police that the hostel management was also forcing the woman to pay her dues ahead of Eid. Therefore, she got disillusioned and committed suicide.
Police investigators said they were investigating the incident keeping in view all aspects of the happening including murder or suicide to get rid of blackmailing by someone. The police have shifted the body to the morgue for an autopsy. Further investigations were underway.
‘ROBBER’ SHOT DEAD: City police shot dead an injured robber, shortly after the locals handed him over to the police for interrogation in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Police area, police sources said on Wednesday.
The sources said two bandits shot at and wounded a retired army officer on offering resistance in (Kamran-Block) the Iqbal Town police vicinity after Tuesday midnight. The bandits were fleeing when the local residents challenged them and managed to capture one of them and the other was managed to flee the scene. They also badly tortured the bandit and later handed him over the police.
The policemen contacted their senior officers and after getting ‘go ahead’ from the higher authority, they pumped several bullets into his body. The police later removed the body of the alleged robber, yet to be identified, to the morgue for an autopsy. Further investigations are underway.
Meanwhile, a 30-year-old man was shot dead when the relatives of a married woman opened fire on her in-laws over domestic dispute in City Raiwind area, police said.
Investigators said that Farman sustained bullet wounds after the relatives of his brother’s wife opened fire on his family during their scuffle, which erupted on Wednesday afternoon. Police said the relatives of the woman had visited her in-laws house for reconciliation when the brawl erupted. The police have arrested over a dozen men and also recovered weapons from their possession. Further investigations are underway.
