Ustad Salamat remembered

LAHORE - Classical music lovers celebrated the achievements of eminent classical music singer Ustad Salamat Ali Khan on his 10th death anniversary. With the death of Ustad on July 11, 2001, a glorious chapter of classical music was also closed. The late singer received worldwide fame for his command in singing beyond Asia. He was awarded with 'Pride of Performance Award by the government of Pakistan. A large number of music lovers including Ustad Tasadduq Ali Khan (brother of Ustad Salamat), Riaz Ali Batalvi and others attended the ceremony. Ustad Akbar Ali Khan and Ustad Shafqat Salamat Ali Khan performed on the occasion. Born in 1934 in the heartland of Punjab at Shamchaurasi, Khan belonged to a family of traditional musicians representing the Shamchaurasi Gharana. It is claimed that the Gharana was founded in the 16th century by Mian Chand Khan and Mian Suraj Khan who were contemporaries of Mian Tansen at the court of Emperor Akbar the Great.
