Defence Ministry summons MD PIA

LAHORE - The Ministry of Defence has summoned the Managing Director PIA, Aijaz Haroon to inquire about the recent massive flight disruptions, sources in the airline claimed on Wednesday. The MD has left for Islama-bad from Karachi by Pk-300 on Wednesday morning to join Ministry of Defence (MoD) query. It is worth mentioning here that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had taken notice of the delay in PIA flights few days back. However PIA spokesman has ruled out any such query and said MD PIA was on his routine visit to Islamabad and his visit had no connection with the MoD summons. He also said that MD would attend the meeting of the some standing committee of National Assembly for which he had cancelled his another programme wherein he had to attend a meeting of aviation in New-York. He was supposed to operate himself a flight enrooted Lahore-Manchester-New-York. He said PIA send its flight schedule reports to MoD in routine and MoD meeting always is attended by a team of PIA senior officials and not only by MD PIA. Sources claimed that the Umrah operations of National Flag Carrier ran into massive disruption from 6th September when a conveyer belt at Jeddah Airport got stuck resulting in piling up of passengers cargo and subsequently disruption in flig-hts. Hundreds of Pakistani passengers remained stranded, some of them up to 39 hours, at Jeddah and Riyadh airports of Saudi Arabia during Eid days because of delay in PIA flights. Tunis Air shows that their flights from Jeddah were delayed but were operated according to the given delayed time, while PIA flights were delayed upto 48 hours but the staff was unable to give accurate time to passengers or relatives in Pakistan. After the completion of Umrah operation on Wednesday the Jeddah flights on Wednesday and scheduled for Thursday were mostly plan-ned in time, while some delays were witnessed in other domestic and international flights including PK74-12 JED-KHI delayed 6 hours, PK736 JED-KHI delayed 8hours, PK7410 JED-KHI 6.20 hours. Sources claimed that at least 16 domestic and international flights were effected on September 14 and 15 by 4 to 48 hours.
