LAHORE – Justice Ali Baqar Najfi on Monday took oath as additional judge in the Lahore High Court.
LHC Chief Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed administrated oath in a ceremony at the LHC premises. The other judges of LHC, Advocate General Punjab Ashtar Ausaf Ali, senior lawyers and experts attended the ceremony.
A Parliamentary Committee on Appointment of judges approved appointment of seven judges. PML-N Senator Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting of the committee. The body approved appointment of two judges to the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) and five additional judges to the Lahore High Court (LHC).
Abdul Sami, Aysha A Malik, Shahid Waheed, Ibadur Rehman and Shujaat Ali were approved as additional judges for the LHC, while the appointment of Ali Baqar Najfi was deferred due to unavailability of his national tax number. Senator Ishaq Dar said that the body had also given a nod for the appointment of two retired judges–Muhammad Jahangir Arshad and Sheikh Muhammad Farooq.
Reply sought on plea against MNA: The Lahore High Court on Monday sought reply from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and others on a petition seeking disqualification of PML-N MNA Rao Mazhar Hayat for having fake degree.
Petitioners Arshad Ibrahim submitted that Rao Hayat had been elected as member of national assembly during the last general election in 2008 from constituency of NA-138, Kasur. However, the rival group filed complain against him in ECP for having fake degree, he contended adding that the ECP found the degree bogus after verification and it sent a letter to the Kasur sessions judge that ordered DPO Khurram Ali Shah for the registration of a case against accused.
