LAHORE Investigations Police Chief on Tuesday said that the police are probing into the kidnapping of American development expert Dr Warren Weinstein keeping in view different aspects of the happening. According to him, the police investigators are not clear whether the men who kidnapped the Country Head of a US-based international aid organization were criminals or militants. We are working on different lines keep in point various aspects of the incident, DIG Malik Ali Amer told reporters while addressing a news-conference here on Tuesday. The DIG Investigation also said that the police were trying to draw sketches of one or two accused as six out of eight kidnappers were reportedly wearing masks. He said that Dr Warren was working on a civil project of Poverty Alleviation Fund and it would be premature to say that he was kidnapped by any terrorist group. He added that no terrorist organization had claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of Dr Warner so far. Responding to a question about the kidnapping of Amir Malik, son-in-law of former Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. (retd) Tariq Majeed, he said that the police had found some clue in this regard and he would be recovered soon. Unidentified kidnappers had abducted Amir Malik from Garden Town area in August last year. Meanwhile, according to the police sources the investigators are still questioning Weinsteins driver and the four men who were guarding his house when he was abducted from his Model Town office-cum-residence. Reportedly, the U.S. Embassy claimed that the FBI agents in Pakistan are working with Pakistani authorities to locate Weinstein. Gunmen stormed into the residence of Dr Warren Weinstein, the country director for J.E. Austin Associates, before predawn on Saturday and took him along with them. The armed men also tortured 70-year-old Dr Warren as he tried to put up resistance. He had told his staff that he would be wrapping up his latest project and moving out of Pakistan by Monday, just a couple days after he was kidnapped. Earlier, the police were hoping the guards could throw some light on who targeted Weinstein but came up empty-handed. We dont have any concrete information in hand so far, one of the investigators said, when contacted. Meanwhile, furniture, electronics gadgets and other items worth Rs two million were reduced to ashes as huge fire broke out in a restaurant at MM Alam road here on Tuesday, rescue workers and firefighters said. Several units of fire brigade rushed to the spot and managed to put out the fire after hectic efforts, Rescue 1122 spokesman said. However, no loss of life was reported. The cause behind the fire was said to be short-circuiting.
