Tension still prevails at GC Gulberg

LAHORE - Tension kept engulfing the Government College Gulberg here on Tuesday, the second day of the incident wherein college former principal and staff were divided into two groups and they levied charges of corruption against each other. Attendance of the students remained very thin and only a few students were seen in the college premises when this scribe visited the said college on Tuesday. However, administration of the college and newly-appointed Principal Muhammad Zaheer Dogar claimed that atmosphere of the college remained calmed and regular classes were conducted. It is worth mentioning here that tension gripped the college a couple of days back when differences between former principal Abdur Razaq Cheema and rest of the staff became widened and a group of students were called by the former principal, who creating law and order situation in the college, badly damaged the public property and college assets. Newly-appointed principal alleged the former principal for leading the armed group of students who tried to thrash the college staff and teachers. On September 15, on the instructions of additional chief secretary Punjab, the college was closed down. New principal of the college said that he was feared that former principal would create further law and order situation in the college. He said that admission process of the first year students had been completed and from Wednesday the college would be started regularly. On the other hand when contacted former principal of the college Professor Cheema said that all allegations levied against him were false and government removing him from the said post saved his life because the situation was very dangerous now. He blamed that a group of people wanted to occupy the college to which he resisted and ultimately he had to face the removal from the post.
