LAHORE - A special anti-terrorism court on Friday sent Mustafa Kanju and his four guards to jail on 14-day judicial remand for allegedly killing an orphan boy Zain and injuring another in Cantt area.
South Cantt Police produced Mustafa Kanju, son of former minister of foreign affairs Siddique Kanju, and his guards including Ikram Ullah, Asif, Saad and Sadiq before the court of ATC judge.
The police did not seek further remand of said accused saying that the investigation had been completed. On it, the judge sent the accused to jail on 14-day judicial remand with directions to police to produce them again by May 7 and submit challan of the case.
South Cantt police arrested Mustafa Kanju from his home town Lodhran and registered FIR against him under 7-ATA and Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The arrest came a day after Kanju opened indiscriminate fire when his luxury car accidentally hit the vehicle of a woman in Lahore’s Cavalry Ground. Bullets hit Zain, a motorcyclist, and Husnain, 18, who had come out of the house after hearing the noise. Zain, a class-IX student, died on the spot and Husnain was critically injured. Six security guards who worked for Kanju were arrested on the night of April 1 from his residence in Old Cavalry Ground. Police had also recovered empty shells of a gun from the crime scene and had later seized the gun used in the incident.
Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the incident, ordered the arrest of the suspect and announced Rs0.5m for the family of the deceased. He also assured them of the provision of justice. Meanwhile, the Lahore High Court on Friday adjourned until April 24, the hearing of petitions challenging the validity of the notification appointing a judicial tribunal to probe into Model Town incident.
A full bench headed by Justice Khalid Mahmood khan heard the case. The bench adjourned the hearing for further arguments. 14 people died and about 100 people got severely injured in a clash between police and workers of Minhajul Quran in Model Town in June last year. And an inquiry tribunal was constituted which declared the Punjab government responsible for innocent people.
