Model Town Society: Commercialisation eats up fun venues

LAHORE - What to talk about Northern Lahore and other less developed areas when each and every problem exists in one of the best housing colony in the City - Model Town Society. Illegal commercialisation, leasing of public playgrounds to private clubs, mushrooming of nurseries, conversion of greenbelts into parking lots, traffic chaos and inefficient sewerage system is the hallmark of Model Town Society. The MTS management is not giving due attention to resolve these problems, thus putting the residents in troubled water. The residents believe that instead of taking measures to end their woes, the management is acting as a silent spectator, thus leaving all problems un-addressed to utter disappointment of the residents. "There is a complete ban on conversion of residential premises to commercial ones in the society. Despite ban, the MTS has changed the status of 52 premises from residential to commercial during the last couple of years," said Khalid Ikram, former President MTS, adding, the MTS has leased out all playgrounds to private clubs, thus depriving the residents of this necessary facility. He said the greenbelts were flooding with nurseries. A number of offices in the society were using greenbelts in front of their premises for parking purposes in violation of society by-laws, he added. Khalid said the sewerage system at Model town Link Road has outlived its life but the MTS was not taking any step to replace it with the new one. He said negligence on the part of the MTS management to replace the damaged line was creating serious problems for the residents of the locality. He said the Model Town Link Road and adjoining arteries were already overloaded but the MTS management leased out precious land for peanuts to allow construction of MAKRO. He said that construction of huge cash and carry store in Model Town would not only create environmental hazards but it would also worsen traffic problems in otherwise peaceful housing society. "Not so long ago, there were times when kids and grown ups and ladies used to walk in the evening and kids play cricket, football or just hangout in the grassy grounds near their homes, in model town. But suddenly, every thing in model town went commercial including parks and open grounds," said Syed Jalil Hassan, a resident.  Previously very few grounds were on lease or commercialised. Then there were few nurseries and sports clubs. The rest was open and free. "Now no ground is available to the residents as all have been leased out and fenced. These grounds are leased to outsiders, they play, have fun, arrange functions and wedding parties, do music concerts late night, sub-lease, film shoot and gift it to someone in high ups too," lamented another resident of Model Town.
