LAHORE - The Lahore High Court on Friday called for a reply from Federal Government, Ministry of Information and Technology, and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority for October 4 next to a petition pointing out presence of blasphemous and objectionable content on the international websites. The petitioner Muhammad and Ahmad of a Human Right Organisation through advocate M Azhar Siddique showed to the court certain pieces of objectionable material which he had downloaded from the websites to negate the claims made on August 4 by PTA that such contents have been removed from the websites and the Facebook. Azhar contended that the PTA had in fact committed contempt of the court by misstating on this highly sensitive issue. He prayed to the Court to make the downloaded content part of the pending case. The counsel also blamed the PTA for having certain persons in its ranks who were showing ignorance about removing the objectionable content carrying out a conspiracy against Islam. He offered to provide such skilled persons to the PTA who could do the needful within four days. On being asked by the court on this offer, the PTA representative said the PTA had enough skilled persons to do the job and they were already engaged in removing all the objectionable sites on the internet. He said the authority had already closed down about 12,000 such sites and it had closed down as many as 240 so far in the current month only. The petitioner counsel, however, confronted this claim of the PTA. The petitioner through the instant applications had prayed to the court to direct the government to move the United Nations in terms of its Article 20(2) of the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to take action against those who were putting obnoxious and blasphemous contents on the international websites. Traffic rules awareness drive Chief Traffic Officer Syed Ahmed Mubeen Friday directed the Traffic Education Unit to launch education campaign on traffic rules to create awareness among the students of various educational institutions.
